鰕虎科,屬肉食性動物,專吃小於自己體型且行動不快的水中生物,常見於河川,湖泊及池塘,雖有牙齒,但吃東西是用吞的.其中以南美鰭龍(Gobioides broussonnetii)成魚體長可達55公分,是本科中最大尾的蝦虎.
